James C. Egan

James Egan was born and raised in Seattle and attended Seattle Public Schools. He graduated from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington in 1994 with a degree in Philosophy. Mr. Egan honed his writing skills as the Editor-in-Chief of the Whitman College newspaper, The Whitman Pioneer. He traveled and spoke publicly with the Whitman College Debate Team and Theater Program. Mr. Egan then served as a public defense investigator with a Seattle area Public Defense Agency (SCRAP) over two years and published stories as a newspaper reporter for a weekly in Cornwall, Southwest England.

James Egan’s Personal Statement on Police Misconduct

Throughout my legal career of the past 13 years, I have been interested in studying and exposing police misconduct. I have seen it in small and large ways in my criminal defense work over the past decade. In mid-2011 I obtained a set of written internal findings of the Seattle Police that included some serious profanity and threats used against a pair of minorities who were unnamed. I asked for the in-car video and was denied it due to supposed "privacy rights" of the subjects who had been mistreated and reported that mistreatment through an internal police "trial" of the officers.

Civil Rights

Besides criminal defense work, the Law Offices of James C. Egan also does civil rights plaintiff's work involving civil rights issues. General discrimination, police brutality and government discrimination have been a focus. In one case that resulted in a settlement with the City of Seattle, police had wrongfully arrested a few clients for having a party on their property. Although the basis for the police presence had been addressed, those clients were arrested and booked anyway.
