Joshua S. Schaer

Joshua Schaer has eight years of experience representing clients charged in criminal and traffic cases.

Before joining the Law Offices of James Egan in June 2007, Mr. Schaer worked as a public defender in Seattle, Bellevue, and Redmond, handling misdemeanors, expedited felonies and appeals. Mr. Schaer also represented privately-retained clients on DUI, infraction, and civil cases. He also has done work with business contract and intellectual property matters.

Mr. Schaer was elected to the Issaquah City Council in 2007, and currently chairs the Transportation Committee. He is a member of the Council’s Services & Operations Committee and Sustainability Committee, and is the City’s delegate to the Eastside Transportation Partnership. He is also qualified to serve as a Judge Pro Tempore in the King County District Court.

Mr. Schaer wrote the appellate briefs and successfully co-argued before the State Supreme Court in City of Seattle v. Clark-Munoz, 152 Wn.2d 39, 93 P.3d 141 (2004). The Court's decision resulted in statewide breath test suppression for numerous DUI defendants. He was successful against the City of Seattle's appeal to Superior Court, and stopped the government's opportunity for appellate review in the Court of Appeals - Division One, in a 2004 case involving improperly-followed breath test procedures. Mr. Schaer also created a legal issue considered by the State Supreme Court in City of Bellevue v. Lee et al., and argued before the Court of Appeals in City of Seattle v. Hon. Holifield.

Mr. Schaer graduated from the University of Washington Law School in 2001. He was named to the Moot Court Honor Board and was Founder of the Technology Law Society. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science with Honors from the University of Washington in 1998. He also provides supervision and trial training to legal interns, and has judged Moot Court Competitions. Outside the office, Mr. Schaer enjoys spending time with his family, playing softball, teaching Sunday School, and reading about science.
